How many of you have heard, 'You can't get a job without experience, and you can't get experience without having a job'? Now you can get experience. Join the crew of Cowabunga and work directly with Director James Lopez as he takes you through the physical process of being on a crew making of film. You will create and do the work for the various creative departments and learn first hand what is and will be needed from you as a working artist on production when get hired for a studio or make your own film. Each week consists of a lecture presentation, assignment and review session just like when working for a studio. This is not a school assignment to achieve the right answer. This is not a studio project where you need to fulfill their vision. This is you learning and working on ‘creating your vision’ of a story.
Selected work from the class will be compiled into a show reel for The Producers Show at CTNX 2021. Showing a behind the scenes ‘making of’ look at what this class has produced that will illustrate a variety of creative visions and talent to producers and employers.
Now’s your chance to be part of the crew to be guided by a professional, and to get your vision and talent seen by those that matter at CTNX 2021.
You will be asked to submit examples of your work after you register. If you do not meet the requirements you will be refunded.
Must be 18+ years of age.
NOTE: Artwork selected to be shown at the Producers Show is based on review.

JAMES LOPEZ is a veteran Disney animator who has been working as a professional in the animation industry for 25 years. His credits at Disney include being a Lead Animator on films such as The Emperor's New Groove and Hercules and as an animator on the character "Dr. Facilier" in The Princess and the Frog and "Timon" in The Lion King. He has also worked for studios such as Warner Bros., Dreamworks and Nickelodeon in both television and features an has performed a variety of positions that range from Directing, Storyboarding, Layout, Art Direction, Production Design and Character Design. He is an alumni of CalArts where he recently taught drawing and animation to inspire a new generation of artists.
The Visual Development and Character Design Department

We will discuss the kind of artwork that constitutes Visual Development, and dive into the intricacies of character design as well.
The Storysketch Department
September 30, 2021, 11 am - 1 pm PDT
We will cover the basics of storyboarding that include concepts such as continuity, camera angles, cutting, and composition.
The Animation Department
October 14, 2021, 11 am - 1 pm PDT
We will continue the previous week's topic with some slightly more advanced concepts in storyboarding.
The Backgrounds and Digital Painting Department
October 28, 2021, 11 am - 1 pm PDT
We will talk about the process of planning a shot through Layout and basic background composition and painting techniques.
Review and Producer Pre-Show Prep
November 11, 2021, 11 am - 1 pm PDT
We will cover the homework assignment from Backgrounds and Digital Painting, and prepare for the Producer Show!
November 19-21, 2021
A complimentary 3-day exhibit floor ticket to CTNX2021 to participate in the Cowabunga Producers Show where producers and industry leaders are invited to see the work done on this project.
